What are people happy with in the area of printer/scanners these days?
I'm not interested in ink jet, just laser. And while I probably don't
really need color printing, I'll consider it.

You can’t really miss with most HP printers. These are generally well supported under Linux in CUPS and HPLIP

https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/gethplip

(Also in most distro repos). Scanner support sometimes takes a proprietary blob plugin, but that is fairly well automated in HPLIP. I know some here despise HP laser printers but they have never let me down - so far.

Make sure to check the supported printers list esp. if you repo has an older version.
